Vintage Architectural Screen - Jo Fresh store, NYC
While I was in NYC this past weekend I was able to visit the new Jo Fresh store on 5th Ave and 43rd Street. Located in the old Manufacturer's Trust Company building, the Jo Fresh retail space is open and minimal. Located on the second level of the store is a large screen made of copper, bronze and nickel. Created by Harry Bertoia in 1954 the screen spans 70ft in length and 16ft in height and originally served as a divider between the private and the public portion of the bank. Designed in the International Modernist Style by Gordon Buns it contains more than 800 separate forms placed in five different vertical planes, both anchored to the floor and the ceiling. It weighs more than 5 tons and was crated in seven 1,500 lb sections. It was great to see such an epic piece of sculpture reused in a modern retail space. Very inspiring!
