Symbolic Shapes

Movement #36, acrylic and pigment on canvas, 2002. Kwesi Owusu-Ankomah's paintings combine his dual interests in the human form and the visual power of symbols from around the world. The black and white patterns were created by merging together selected parts from the Adinkra language, Chinese ideograms and corporate logos. The symbols are bold and are employed strictly for their expressive visual purposes. They suggest a hidden world that is revealed by the designs, yet whose meaning remains concealed for those unable to interpret the signs. Photographed at the Newark Museum of Art. https://www.newarkmuseum.org/
